In this beguiling screen print, Rivans transforms Audrey Hepburn, the darling of vintage cinema, into Gaia, the personification of the Earth and the ancestral mother of all life. References to Audrey’s Britishness – St Paul’s Cathedral, a dainty English tea cup – sit beside more exotic motifs – a plumed cockatoo, a hummingbird in flight – to capture the starlet’s globe-trotting adventures and humanitarian activism. Always alert to contradiction and opposition, Rivans offsets feminine fragility – powder pink flowers, delicate dinner plates – against Superwoman strength. But at root, Lily is as much a tale of our power as of our weakness: a reminder that we share the planet with other forms of life, and that only through harmony and humility can we discover the true beauty of the natural world.
